Abstract
The importance of kola as a psychoactive substance has not been a focus of analysis despite the contemporary interest in licit and illicit drugs. The only exception is Paul Lovejoy’s “ ‘Coffee’ of the Central Sudan.”1 This paper thus seeks to highlight the importance of kola as a “drug” and to stress the need for more research on the medicinal properties of kola.
